I sold the S14 last weekend because a nice kid offered me a good price for it and realistically I don't think I was going to have the patience to finish it. It was also incredibly obnoxious on my 60 mile roundtrip commute, mainly because of the PBM's. If I decide I still want to own a nice S14, I think I'd prefer to just buy Nate's car and change a few things around.

In the meantime, I've picked up something new, and by new, I mean very old.

Photos aren't ready yet and I'm still trying to get it roadworthy, but in the meantime here is some related material.

Mercedes Motoring is an operation out in California that restores primarily W116 and W123 diesels. The work they do is *astounding* and their travel photos are terrific. No airbags or rusted hoods here, these are 100% stock restorations.

British Car Day 2011 - Swap Meet

I'm still soldiering on with this stuff because it interests me, fully aware that it probably doesn't interest anyone else.

This meet has a very substantial swap meet/sale area, which I've also noticed being the case at many meets in Japan like Historix. Whenever I go to a meet in the US, S-chassis or somesuch, this never seems to be the case, which is a shame.

I like poking through endless piles of crap hoping to find something that interests me, and it's also just fun to look at.

This guy had a lot of Lucas electrical bits, including starters, headlights, etc. I'm sure he does a brisk business as this stuff has abysmal failure rates.

Same vendor, but this table was all OEM tool kits. New cars don't really come with much in the way of tools, as no one knows how to fix anything themselves anymore.

Shop manuals, service manuals, and parts catalogs.

Diecast model cars, which was of particular interest to me as I collect old Lesney/Matchbox vehicles. I did not walk away empty handed.

This vendor probably had ten tables of random stuff, including lots of badges.

I think modern engine bays generally look terrible, made worse by the increasingly common black plastic covers.

Engine shots are my favorite part of this show, as there are lots of Jaguars and no one has ever made a prettier postwar engine than Jaguar has, leaving aside the fact that the car will probably only run half the time.

The Chesapeake MG-T Register puts on a British car show at Lilypons gardens that I attend every year. I'm really starting to wonder why I screw around with S14's and things when I could have a TR6 or a TC...

These catch my eye every year, although I think they're a handful.

The parking lot is sometimes even better than the show field. This is obviously not English, but it is probably my favorite postwar car of any type, the Citroen DS.

This is apparently an MG TC underneath. Definitely my favorite car of the show.

I have come to really like cars of this style, only I have no idea what it's called.

Crowns and other full-size 60s/70's Japanese sedans/wagons/trucks, fairly stock restorations on what looks like Torq Thrusts/Astro Supremes, etc. Tire lettering, mooneyes steering wheels, et cetera. Does this "style" have a name?

Can you tell I'm on about these right now?

For anyone who isn't familar, Royal Enfield was a British motorcycle firm that has been in existence since the late 19th century. In the 1950's, due to large orders from the Indian government, they began building some of the bikes in India under a subsidiary. The bikes themselves have not changed much since this time, and the riding community is something of a cult. These are still largely hand-assembled in cottage industry fashion.

Anyway, I was motivated to make this post because they just released a cool promotional video. I was in Chennai for a short while in 2001 but I didn't get the chance to visit the factory. Seeing this makes me regret that even more. Watch in HD.

It's everything I didn't want it to be, which is to say that it's everything it's been since ~1996. I bought it anyway, knowing this, and I have to say that I'm a couple hours into it and it's a lot of fun. It's warmly familiar, albeit idiotic, to buy a game where you do the same things in precisely the same order every four years or so, but with newer visuals.

This game got fairly good reviews stateside, but Famitsu gave it a perfect score. This seems typical of the difference of opinion between American and Japanese reviewers, whereby we in the US will knock something for perhaps not being fresh or new enough, in Japan they'll evaluate it solely on the basis of being fun or not. I'm somewhere in between.

Anyway, if you bought it, comment and post your friend code.

I've been hasty with the "Buy it Now" button lately, thought I'd post some of it.

This is an NTT Data controller for the Super Famicom (SNES). It was part of a package that included a modem and a special cartridge that accessed an NTT DoCoMo off-track betting system. I would like to find the entire setup new in the box, but this will do in the meantime.

I'd never had one of these, so I bid on a PSOne and got it for like $12 shipped. The auction had no picture, so I didn't really know what I was in for. Not bad for twelve bucks, but the owner just shipped it like this without any other box, so it was covered in labels and stamped "Parcel Post". I'd still like a mintier one, but I can't complain for the price.

I also lucked into a pretty good haul of Japanese Saturn games. I primarily wanted this lot because of Last Bronx, but it came with a lot of other good stuff also. I sold my NTSC-J Saturn ages ago, so now I have an excuse to get another one.

I collect Tomica, and so I enjoyed running across these shots in Aohai's Photozou.

As you can probably tell from what he chose to shoot, Aohai is an AE86 owner. The pricing in these shots is only a little cheaper than what I usually pay, so that makes me feel pretty good.

If anyone cares, Tomica is returning to the United States.

At the moment you only get the cars when you buy playsets, which I have no interest in, but when they start selling individually boxed cars, I'll start buying.

2012 Civic, unveiled yesterday.

I was hoping for a *little* more dramatic redesign, but the more I look at this, the more I like it.

Now we just need a real 4-door Civic Type R in the United States. We missed the last one because we lacked potent enough gasoline, etc. I don't even care about the powerplant, leave it the same as the Si, I just want a factory lightweight with upgraded brakes and cooling. I am a ricer, I want RED SEATS.

I also want Champ White instead of this awful pearl white, but generally, I can't argue with the shape of the thing. They just took the last one and better-ized it.

Distressingly, the Civic will no longer be sold in Japan.

That can't be good for aftermarket support.

I see meets like this in Japan frequently, wherein the primary attraction is less the gathering and more the fact that everyone brings the contents of their garages to sell and trade.

Why doesn't this happen in the US? I think the UMD meet this year would be a lot more entertaining if people had blankets covered in parts laid in front of their cars like you see at meets in Japan. Parts, diecast and plastic model cars, stickers, magazines, etc.

I have a few days worth of this coming, all courtesy of Remix's Photozou.

While not this impressive, I could still bring a pretty sizable pile of stuff to a swap meet, we just need to have one.

Is there something wrong with me because I looked at this photo and the FIRST thing that came to my mind was "Is that a Lotus Europa?" (far right).

Our son was born toward the end of December, and so I've been a little too busy to post much on here. It's been excellent, and it was a real struggle to return to normal work/school/life.

It was 50 degrees in DC this past weekend, and so I fired up the Ruckus for the first time in about two months and went riding, which was nice. I miss summer weather and long rides though. Minkus of StandardFunctions fame is always posting incredible shots in the TotalRuckus pic thread, so at least I can ride vicariously.

So this is the other one, I bought this a week ago.

I got a preposterous deal on it, and the plan is to swap over some of the parts from this car onto the red S14, then sell this as stock. It came with some pretty nice stuff, including an ATS DeftForce and some decent Tanabe coils (DD Pros).

Wheels are CR Kai 17x9 +20. I wish they were 18's, but I'll deal, and slamming on 17's will look better while I'm still stock bodied anyway. Need to get PBM spacers.

I guess I could've just kept this and sold the red one, but I prefer red to gold and the red is a slicktop, which is what I wanted. The SE stuff is nice though.

New Problems

Picked this up two weeks ago, the day after I sold the MX73.

It's got a nasty clear coat peel, like sunburn, but otherwise it's perfect. I liked the MX73 a lot more aesthetically, but this is much more fun to drive.

I actually bought another S14 a week later, but I'll save that story for tomorrow.

Given that I'm frustrated with the Cub and waiting on a few parts for the MX73, I'm finally getting around to putting my game room in order. I realized that I own a lot of stuff that I'm not particularly attached to, which I intend to sell so I can refocus on buying more interesting items.

I did stumble across one of my Wonderswans, which I will probably start playing again on my morning train commute. I've always been a big fan of the console, partially developed by Gunpei Yokoi. It has lots of good turn-based strategy titles, especially Gundam franchise stuff. I'm also a sucker for anything with many limited hardware versions.

There was a Limited Box like this for both FF1 and FF2.

Finally got my front suspension done. It looks like there's a slight reverse rake, but I measured it and it's dead even front and rear. The rear just tucks so much more that it creates the illusion, I suppose.

I test-fitted a Mk1 today on the front and I'm definitely going to need extended studs. I'm getting excited about the car again though, I hadn't been for awhile.

Anyone have a grey interior they want to sell me?

New Old Thing

Two weeks ago I finally got something that I've been wanting for a very long time. I am now the proud owner of a C100 Honda Super Cub, I think it is a 1960.

It ran great when I bought it, and then I got it home and now it won't start. I think I probably have a bad ground somewhere, but I've been too busy with the MX73 to play with it. Did I mention that the Ruckus left me stranded also? I can't win lately.

At any rate, the bike is in very good mechanical shape and is cosmetically original. I'm going to fix my ground problem and ride it as-is for awhile. It's about 5mph faster than the Ruckus, clutchless 3-speed. Odometer says it has 23 milest, and it looks like the original odometer to me, but I'm not sure I'm willing to bet anything on it.

Nisei Week Showoff - Masaru Tanaka

While I'm obviously not the first person to put up Nisei shots, I'm probably the first person to post these.

Shot by Masaru Tanaka, who had also shot the Daihatsu Charmant and USDM content of many posts ago.

I'm not generally much for houndstooth engine bays, gold valve covers, and the like, but it's nice to look at.

This S2000 is beyond absurd with all that poke, but I like the atypical color.
